Well I have been trying to get back in shape. And to find some peace of mind. So I enrolled for hot yoga…yes it’s hot, hot, hot! You are supposed to drip in sweat and hopefully gain some peace of mind in the process. I like it. In fact I am falling in love with it, but my nature is naturally to resist any form of love that needs work…hard work. No I am not an empty, soul-less person, it is just easier to fall in love with sugar and nice pastries than to fall in love for stretching till it hurts, wrestling with girth, trying to do positions with funny names, like camel pose…etc. A camel’s hump is on its back. Mine is on my front. It’s called a big belly!😳 There is no way I can ‘camel-pose’ without immense discomfort. But I am falling in love with the heat, the nice studios, the friendly English/French speaking teachers, the nice location.
So everyday after leaving the studio, I catch the ‘green line’ on the Metro home. You know like in London, back in the day, there used to be the station announcement, over the PA, usually by someone with a ‘West Indian accent’..that went like this… ‘MINE DE GAP’ as passengers alighted from the train, to remind them of the gap between the platform and the train track? Well given the play on ‘accents’ where Caribbean folks tend not to pronounce ‘th’ in the, or the ‘d’ at the end, Londoners knew what it meant.🤓 Well here in Montreal I am reminded of one of those regular announcements everyday, except theirs is when they announce the stations as they come along. To my ear, there is this one particular station, and how it’s pronounced French style, that leaves me confused!😬🤔 And it’s always as I am coming back from my hot yoga class. It goes like this ……….’Porchaine station PIE-IX’. Seems harmless, until you try to pronounce it in French.😁
Porchaine estacion PIE-IX….pronounced ‘pee-neuf’….however whenever the voice comes up…it never fails to sound, to my English ear…’Porchaine estacion Pee-Nus….on a bad day…it sounds more like ..’Pee-nis’🙊🙀😰
Can you imagine, everyday, like clockwork, coming out of dripping, hot sweating yoga, I have to hear on my way home….’Porchaine estacion PEE-Nus or Porchaine estacion Pee-Nis’?!? 😖😱 I just thank my lucky stars that is not my stop!🙉 Three or four stops up and I get off at shiny Cadillac…and Cadillac sounds like Cadillac, not ‘Pee-Nus’ or ‘Pee-Nis’..to my tired, post hot yoga ear!😳…Mon Dieu…yes, My Good Lord… because according to Wikipedia …this Pie-Ix station name ie ‘pee-neuf’…has holy underpinnings….It was named in 1912 for Pope Pius IX (1792–1878), elected Pope in 1846. Pope…’pee-neuf’…’pee-nus’…Somebody is having a laugh and it’s not me!?😫😰
